Paganism and Christianity by ~Cho-ke:iconCho-ke:

Friday the 13th was originally a day of celebration for female significance from the Pagans. However, Christianity changed this into a day of bad luck with taboo once it had become the more dominant religion. Without Pagans, the Christian religion would not have existed today.  Religions are basically all the same no matter how you look at them. They all worship, and have beliefs. The only thing that is different is what they worship, what beliefs they have, and how far they go in trying to convert other people.
Not many people realize it, but the Christian religion is not as original as it sounds. Their holidays like Easter, St. Valentine's Day, Summer break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas have been taken from the Pagans while Christianity was still new to the world. The Christians had taken these holidays, which originally were Ostara, Imbolc, Litha, Lughnassadh and Yule, and changed around their meaning to better suit their own religion so they could practice it a little more out in the open. The only holiday that the Christians did not take, but more used as a cover up for a tragic event is St. Patrick's day, but that will be touched on later.
"In trying to understand why they would try to do such a thing, one has to keep in mind that for the first couple of hundred years after Christ and the birth of Christianity, Christians were forced to practice their religion in secret for fear of persecution. This may explain why they linked their Christian celebrations with Pagan celebrations to avoid being discovered. Their inability to practice Christianity in public during this time probably resulted in their dislike of Pagan religions, the dominant religions during the time of the Christian persecution. And in turn, this led to their persecution of Pagan celebrations when Christianity became the dominant religion." (Kalapos, 1)"
Yes, Christians and Pagans have their differences. But they are alike as well. They each have their own higher being to worship and celebrate certain events on days with festivals, gatherings, socializing and feasting. Both religions love, and they expand out to various different types. Like how there is Protestant, Roman Catholics, Baptist among others. There is also Dragonic, Fairy, Sky, Angelic and other types of branches of Paganism like Druidism and Shamans.
There are the similarities that seem to be looked over a lot, because there are more differences between the two religions. As stated before by Gabrielle Kalapos, the Christians did not enjoy the Pagan religion because they could not practice their own religion in fear of prosecution. Once Christianity had become the dominant religion, it wanted to convert all the other 'non-believers'.
There is one certain event that is hard to forget. The Salem witch-hunt started in 1692 in Massachusetts. The mass hysteria started with it saying in the bible that witchcraft was wrong and that whoever preformed it worshiped, or was teamed up with Satan. "In effect, the definition of "witch" was changed to include "heretic"" (The Magick Sprite, 1)With all of these Christians believing this, not only was there mass killings of Pagans in Massachusetts, but also wherever Christianity had touched there seemed to be people hung, drowned, burned, beheaded, crushed and left in jail to die for whoever practiced the Craft.
Places like France, Mexico, Africa, America, Germany, Scotland, England, Italy and Ireland were affected by the blood of the innocence. In Scotland from 1562 to 1603 more then 17,000 were killed. In England after 1573 70,000 were killed. In Great Britain between 1600 and 1680 there were 40,000 Pagans executed. Then, the Inquisition killed 30,000, 300 or more were killed in South African between 1986 and 1996 then, in Indonesia in 1998, 100 or more Pagans were killed.
"St. Patrick is considered as the Patron Saint of Ireland. There are many, though, in Ireland that hold him in disdain. These people will never celebrate his legacy or life. It has been stated that St. Patrick rid Ireland of all of its snakes. Scientists have found that Ireland had not had snakes since icebergs surrounded the island. What could then be meant by the old legend? Before Christianity began to spread into Ireland, the Druids were the leading religious figures in Ireland. One of the symbols of the Druids was a snake. In Christianity, the snake symbolized the devil." (Poupard, 1)

That wonderful holiday that we all celebrate with green and lepricons about the patriot saint of Ireland is merely just a cover up of what Saint Patrick had actually really done. Since the Christians could not convert any of the Druids, they decided it be best to chase them away from Ireland. Though, the Christians could not directly do that, for it would make them look bad. So they had a Warrior, not a Clergyman, chase the Druids out from Ireland. Any of the Druids that still stayed, were killed. It had been recorded that St. Patrick had lead to the murders of almost eight hundred Druid Priest and Priestesses.
With all of this now in your mind, that Paganism was here first, how a majority of Christians fell into mass hysteria, and how even though the two religions may not know it, they do have their similarities, now would be a time to stop and think about all the other different cover ups in history and how other religions were born from another. Because the connection between Paganism and Christianity, is not the first.

I have been interested in such topics for some years now - you sum it all up very well. I didn't know though about Friday 13th, that's very interesting. But unfortunately not really surprising, isn't it.

Yeah, I know those feelings all too well. ^^ Thinking about how many Greek temples (and others as well of course; I just think they were some of the most beautiful) they destroyed and how much art and ancient knowledge got lost because of them makes me mad as hell. And incredibly sad.

It saddends me a lot too ;-; But... there isn't much that you can do about the past... except learn from it to try and make a better future :D

Hmmm... educate people about Christianity's "glorious" past. Stuff like that mustn't be forgotten - same for all other similar atrocities no matter who committed them. Although Gandhi said "History teaches people that history teaches people nothing.", I do hope he was wrong.

I just tend to think that everyone has their own different opinions on things... they are neither right or wrong xD So -shrugs-

But the actions resulting from those opinions can be right or wrong. And opinions are built by information - or in some unfortunate cases misinformation.
